Cape Verde Goalkeeper Vozinha to Reunite with Mother Ahead of Uruguay Match

Vozinha's Mother to Attend World Cup Match After Visa Waiver

Cape Verde's goalkeeper, Vozinha, whose exceptional performance secured a draw against Spain, is anticipated to be reunited with his mother before the team's next game against Uruguay on Sunday. The 40-year-old athlete had previously shared that his mother was unable to attend the World Cup due to the high costs associated with obtaining a U.S. visa.

However, U.S. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced that the visa fees have been waived, and arrangements are being made for her travel to Miami. Jeffries stated on X, "No mother should miss the chance to see her child make history." He added that he had communicated with Secretary of State Marco Rubio to ensure her attendance at Cape Verde's upcoming match.

"It is a privilege to announce that Vozinha's mom will be able to secure a visa in time to attend the game this Sunday against Uruguay. All fees have been waived consistent with official policy. Travel arrangements are now being made for mother and son to reunite in Miami," Jeffries' statement read. He also expressed gratitude to Secretary Rubio, U.S. State Department officials, the government of Cape Verde, and FIFA for their collaborative efforts.

Visa Challenges for Cape Verde Citizens

Cape Verde is among five nations participating in the tournament whose citizens are typically required by the U.S. government to pay a refundable visa deposit of approximately £11,000. An exemption for fans with match tickets was introduced in May.

Vozinha's Journey and Emotional Reaction

Vozinha has gained significant attention following his standout performance against Spain, attracting a substantial number of new social media followers. The goalkeeper, who has 91 caps for his country, currently plays for Chaves in Portugal's second division, having previously played in Slovakia, Angola, Moldova, and Cyprus.

Following the goalless draw, Vozinha shared his emotional response: "I cried because I grew up with my grandparents. Unfortunately, they were not here. They died a few years before. They were everything to me, everything in my life. And also because of my mum. She didn't manage to be here because of the visa. Because of the money you have to pay for the visa, we didn't manage it in time. I would like her to be here."

At 40 years and 12 days old, Vozinha made history as the oldest player to debut in a nation's first World Cup match. He reflected on his career, noting, "I started playing professional football when I was 25 years old, in 2012. It was too late for a person like me. I thought about leaving the national team, but then I continued because of this dream."

Cape Verde is scheduled to play Uruguay on June 21, followed by Saudi Arabia on June 27, as part of Group H.
