Fuel Sales Restricted in Crimea
Russian-backed officials in Crimea have announced a suspension of fuel sales to the general public. This decision comes as Ukraine continues its campaign of drone attacks against critical oil facilities and supply lines within the annexed territory and nearby Russian regions.
Impact of Recent Attacks
Prior to this complete halt, fuel had already been rationed due to disruptions caused by Ukrainian strikes on logistical routes. Sergey Aksyonov, the governor of Crimea, stated that petrol stations would now only supply government agencies deemed essential for the peninsula's "functioning and security," turning away individual consumers and businesses.
Earlier reports from Governor Aksyonov detailed a Ukrainian drone attack on an oil depot in Kerch, resulting in four fatalities and 28 injuries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky characterized this strike as a "just response to Russia's brutal attacks."
Broader Ukrainian Offensive
President Zelensky also confirmed that Ukrainian forces targeted a logistics facility for oil transportation in Russia's Krasnodar region, which borders Crimea across the Kerch Strait. Local authorities in Krasnodar reported one death on a passenger ferry during these incidents. Additionally, military logistics facilities and radar systems were reportedly struck, though specific locations were not disclosed by the president.
"Russia understands only strength, and our long-range strength is certainly working for peace," President Zelensky stated, emphasizing the strategic intent behind these long-range operations.
These actions are part of an intensified period of conflict, with both sides escalating attacks as diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire remain stalled. Ukraine has increasingly focused on Russian energy infrastructure, viewing it as a vital component supporting Russia's military operations.
Logistical Challenges and Retaliation
Crimea, illegally annexed by Russia in 2014, has faced considerable logistical difficulties and shortages, exacerbated by the recent attacks. The peninsula holds strategic importance for Russian military operations in Ukraine and is also a popular holiday destination for Russian citizens, some of whom have reported difficulties in securing fuel for their return journeys.
Last week, an oil refinery in Moscow was hit in what was described as Ukraine's largest attack on the Russian capital, leading to promises of retaliation from Moscow. Russia's defense ministry claimed to have intercepted 239 Ukrainian drones overnight during the recent escalation.
