Ebbw Vale's Post-Brexit Reality: Economic Challenges Persist Despite Investment

Ebbw Vale's Economic Landscape a Decade After Brexit Vote

A decade ago, Ebbw Vale in South Wales recorded the highest proportion of 'Leave' votes in the country during the Brexit referendum. This outcome occurred despite the town having been a significant beneficiary of substantial European Union funding, much of which has not been entirely substituted following the UK's departure from the EU.

Transformation and Lingering Issues

The former site of Ebbw Vale's steelworks has undergone a considerable transformation. It now hosts an array of modern structures, including a hospital, a leisure center, and a college campus. Over the past ten years, this development has expanded to include a public-private cybersecurity research facility and two technology companies. Enhancing connectivity, a new railway station also commenced operations at the site in 2015.

However, a recent observation of the Welsh valleys town revealed a quiet atmosphere. Despite the new facilities and investments aimed at revitalization, the presence of people seemed sparse, with livestock, specifically a ewe and three lambs, noted in a rewilded area adjacent to the tech buildings, underscoring the area's tranquil nature.
