Stokes' Absence Felt in Second Test Loss
England fast bowler Josh Tongue has acknowledged that the team has felt the impact of captain Ben Stokes' absence as they faced a significant defeat in their second Test match against New Zealand. Stokes, along with fellow pace bowler Gus Atkinson, was not available for the Test at The Oval due to an investigation following an incident at a London nightclub.
Despite their unavailability for the national team, both players were permitted to participate in county cricket. Stokes notably scored 95 runs for Durham against Northamptonshire on Saturday, marking his highest score in any form of cricket since his century for England against India last July. Prior to the nightclub incident, England's head coach Brendon McCullum had expressed confidence in the 35-year-old Stokes' ability to regain his batting form.
Tongue Comments on Stokes' Return to Form
Speaking after the fourth day of the second Test, Tongue stated he was unaware of Stokes' specific score for Durham but spoke highly of his former captain. "Stokesy is an unbelievable player," Tongue remarked. "I made my England debut when he was captain. I've got huge respect for Stokesy and it's always nice seeing him get some runs."
Impact on Team Balance and Leadership
Stokes' dual role as a leader and an all-rounder has been noticeably missed, as England is heading for its third consecutive Test defeat at The Oval. Chasing an ambitious target of 463 runs, England concluded Saturday at 182-5. The team likely would have lost within four days if not for the resilient, unbeaten 75 runs from stand-in captain Joe Root.
Without Stokes to provide balance, England had to field Jordan Cox as a specialist batter at number seven and omitted spinner Shoaib Bashir. With Ollie Robinson sidelined by injury and Jamie Smith on paternity leave, Root was left to lead a team featuring three debutants and the fewest combined caps for an England side in 17 years.
"Yeah, we've missed him," Tongue commented regarding Stokes. "Obviously we've got a lot of leaders in our team as well. Rooty stepping in as captain is an unbelievable player and an unbelievable leader as well. It's been good."
Investigation and Potential Return
The incident involving Stokes and Atkinson stemmed from breaking England's midnight curfew while celebrating their victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's. The pair were present during an event where a security staff member was reportedly struck by a Saracens rugby player. Both Stokes and Atkinson have cooperated with investigations and could be eligible for the third Test at Trent Bridge, scheduled to begin on Thursday, with Stokes potentially resuming his role as captain.
