Persistent High Temperatures Expected Across Eastern Europe
Following a period of intense heat in central and western Europe, including the UK, the extreme weather pattern is projected to migrate eastward. Although some western regions may experience a slight cooling trend accompanied by potential downpours and thunderstorms, eastern European nations are forecast to endure temperatures significantly higher than the early July average for the coming week. Countries such as southern Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and the northern Balkans could see peak temperatures ranging from 35°C to 40°C.
Typhoon Mekkhala Gathers Strength in Western Pacific
Concurrently, Typhoon Mekkhala, identified as the seventh typhoon of the current season in the western Pacific, has intensified east of Luzon. On Sunday, the typhoon recorded sustained winds of 120 km/h (75 mph) and gusts exceeding 160 km/h (100 mph) over open waters. Its projected path indicates a northward trajectory through the Philippine Sea throughout the week.
Forecast models suggest that Mekkhala will reach its maximum intensity between Tuesday and Wednesday, with sustained wind speeds potentially surpassing 160 km/h (100 mph). While the typhoon is anticipated to remain largely over the Philippine Sea, it could generate significant wave conditions in the vicinity of Taiwan, prompting potential advisories for shipping in the area.
