Public Alcohol Ban During Fête de la Musique
As France grapples with an intense heatwave, the government has imposed a ban on alcohol consumption at specific public gatherings coinciding with the annual Fête de la Musique. This nationwide music festival, which typically draws millions to public spaces, is proceeding under red alert warnings issued for 35 French departments, indicating the most serious level of heatwave threat.
The Prime Minister's office, led by Sébastien Lecornu, confirmed that directives have been issued to state-organized events and agencies, instructing them not to provide alcoholic beverages. This measure aims to mitigate potential health risks associated with alcohol consumption during extreme heat.
Record Temperatures and Health Concerns
Forecasters anticipate temperatures between 39°C and 40°C on Sunday, extending from the southwest through the Paris region into Burgundy, with some localized areas potentially reaching 41°C. The heatwave, which has been affecting Europe for several days, has seen temperatures climb 10-15°C above seasonal averages. Authorities predict that temperatures could peak on Monday, potentially matching historical highs.
The government's call to limit alcohol intake is a preventative measure to "preserve emergency and healthcare services and allow medical staff to focus on caring for the most vulnerable." The ongoing heatwave has already caused significant disruptions across the country, leading to the cancellation of numerous train services and the suspension of school classes.
Uncertain Duration and Public Safety Efforts
Météo-France, the national weather service, has expressed uncertainty regarding the duration of the heatwave, which is estimated to impact approximately three-quarters of the French population. In an effort to assist residents and tourists in coping with the high temperatures, authorities in Paris have decided to keep the city's parks and gardens open throughout the night.
The Fête de la Musique, celebrating its 40th anniversary, is traditionally held on the summer solstice. Last year, the event attracted an estimated two million attendees in Paris alone.
