France Implements Measures as Severe Heatwave Grips the Nation

Extreme Heat Prompts National Response

France is currently experiencing a significant heatwave, leading authorities to implement a series of precautionary measures. Over a third of the country has been placed under a red heat alert, the highest level of warning, as temperatures are predicted to climb above 40C in some regions, potentially reaching 42C from Monday.

Impact on Public Events and Activities

The severe weather has prompted the cancellation of certain outdoor sports competitions. Furthermore, restrictions on alcohol consumption have been put in place for the annual Fête de la Musique, a nationwide music festival. These actions aim to mitigate health risks associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat.

Widespread Alerts Across the Country

On Sunday, approximately 53 million people, representing 76% of France's population, were under either a level one or level two heat alert. A record 35 out of the 96 mainland departments were elevated to a red alert, indicating a danger-to-life situation, while an additional 45 departments were under an orange warning, signifying a high risk.
