Ipswich Nears Agreement with Gary O'Neil for Head Coach Role

Ipswich Set to Appoint Gary O'Neil

Ipswich Town Football Club is reportedly nearing an agreement to name Gary O'Neil as their new head coach. The 43-year-old is expected to take over from Kieran McKenna, who departed from Portman Road earlier in June.

Compensation and Coaching Staff

While compensation with O'Neil's current club, Strasbourg, is still being finalized, it is not anticipated to be a significant obstacle for Ipswich. Tim Jenkins and Neil Critchley, who previously worked with O'Neil in France, are also expected to join him in Suffolk.

O'Neil's Background and Ipswich's Interest

O'Neil's appointment would mark his return to the Premier League, having previously managed Bournemouth and Wolves. His tenure at Strasbourg saw the club achieve an eighth-place finish in Ligue 1 last season and reach the Europa Conference League semi-finals, a historic achievement for the French side. Ipswich's hierarchy has reportedly held a long-standing admiration for O'Neil, with the club's chief executive, Mark Ashton, having worked with him during O'Neil's playing days at Bristol City.

Search for a New Head Coach

The search for a new head coach commenced after Kieran McKenna's departure last week. McKenna had a highly successful period at Ipswich, guiding them to three promotions in four seasons, including their recent return to the Premier League. Despite his success, McKenna opted to step down, citing a desire to take a break from football and spend more time with his family. He expressed immense pride in the club's progress and optimism for its future.

Ipswich is scheduled to begin their Premier League season at home against Sunderland on August 22.
