A devastating fire at a high-end beach resort in the Dominican Republic led to the death of one individual and necessitated the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests. The incident occurred on Friday at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach resort in Bayahibe, a popular tourist destination on the Caribbean coast.
Details of the Fire and Casualties
According to DAEH emergency services, the deceased was identified as a 46-year-old Italian tourist. In addition to the fatality, three individuals required medical attention at healthcare facilities, while six others received on-site treatment for minor injuries. Visual evidence, including drone footage, depicted the extensive nature of the fire, showing multiple buildings engulfed in flames and dense black smoke ascending into the sky.
Investigation Underway
The origin of the early-morning inferno remains unknown and is currently under investigation. Initial assessments suggest that strong wind conditions combined with the flammable nature of thatched roofs on some structures contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze. The country's Emergency Operations Center (COE) confirmed that the fire has since been brought under control and that all affected guests have been relocated to alternative accommodations.
Assistance for Affected Tourists
The Italian embassy in the Dominican Republic is providing support to approximately 285 Italian tourists who were staying at or near the resort. This assistance includes issuing emergency passports to those whose travel documents were destroyed in the fire and facilitating arrangements for their return flights. The Italian ambassador reportedly met with the husband of the deceased woman at the hospital where she had been transported.
Authorities have stated that tourist activities in Bayahibe and the surrounding areas remain unaffected by the incident and are continuing as normal. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, which operates the franchised resort, has been contacted for comment regarding the incident.
