Doku's Intentions Spark Debate
Belgian national team winger, Jeremy Doku, has become the subject of discussion after stating his desire to depart the ongoing World Cup tournament to attend the birth of his first child. Doku's wife, Shireen, is expected to give birth in mid-July, coinciding with the potential quarter-final stage of the competition for the Belgian Red Devils.
"It's my first child, so I would definitely want to be there," the 24-year-old Manchester City forward told Reuters. "If you ask me what I want, my answer is that nobody wants to miss the birth of their first child. But I also know that football involves many other considerations. I know the federation supports its players and understands their situations. We'll see what we can do."
Criticism and Support Emerge
Doku's stance has elicited strong reactions, notably from France Pierron, a presenter for the L'Equipe channel. Pierron publicly criticized Doku's plan, labeling a father's presence at birth as "completely useless."
"The World Cup is an incredible joy," Pierron stated on L'Equipe's Facebook page. "There are hundreds of footballers who would kill to be in your shoes. It might never happen again in your life. You're living out a childhood dream, yet you're going to walk away from it all to attend the birth of your child - a disgusting moment, if you'll pardon the expression, where the dad is completely useless."
Conversely, Doku has also received considerable support online. Among those backing him was former French Olympic boxing champion Brahim Asloum, who emphasized the lasting importance of family over temporary sporting events.
"A baby is your entire life. A World Cup is over when it is over," Asloum posted.
Pierron Issues Apology
Following the backlash, France Pierron released a statement on her X page to clarify her initial comments and apologize for any offense caused. She explained that her remarks were a personal opinion made during a contentious exchange and affirmed that she did not intend to diminish the role of fathers.
In related news, Belgium confirmed that Doku would miss their upcoming World Cup group match against Iran due to illness. The team, managed by Rudi Garcia, previously drew their opening game against Egypt 1-1.
