Starmer Steps Down, Reflects on Premiership
Sir Keir Starmer, having served as Prime Minister, has announced his resignation as the leader of the Labour Party. Speaking from outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer expressed his gratitude to his wife in an emotional address, describing his time as Prime Minister as the "proudest moment" of his life.
Starmer confirmed that he has communicated with the King regarding his decision. He also indicated that should a leadership contest ensue, a new Labour leader would be in position before Parliament reconvenes in September.
Burnham Enters Leadership Race
Concurrently with Starmer's announcement, Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, was sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Makerfield. Burnham, who traveled from Manchester to London for the swearing-in ceremony, confirmed his intention to stand as a candidate to succeed Starmer as the Labour leader.
