KPMG Admits to Optus Data Leak and Whistleblower Surveillance

Consulting Firm Faces Scrutiny Over Data Breach and Whistleblower Allegations

KPMG, a global consulting firm, has admitted to an ethical lapse after its employees shared confidential information belonging to telecommunications company Optus with colleagues who were simultaneously preparing a bid for an audit contract with rival firm Telstra. This admission was made during a parliamentary inquiry held recently.

Confidential Information Shared Internally

The core of the issue revolves around the unauthorized dissemination of sensitive Optus data within KPMG. This information was reportedly accessed and then circulated among staff members who were actively engaged in a competitive tender process to secure an audit contract with Telstra. The firm has acknowledged that this action constitutes a breach of ethical conduct.

Whistleblower Claims and Surveillance Allegations

Further complicating the matter, the inquiry also heard allegations concerning the treatment of a whistleblower within KPMG. It was claimed that the consulting firm's executives monitored the whistleblower's laptop. Additionally, the individual raising concerns was reportedly dismissed by the firm as merely having "workplace grievances," according to testimony presented at the parliamentary hearing.

This incident marks another instance where KPMG has faced questions regarding its internal practices and adherence to ethical standards in its operations.
