Former England Goalkeeper Mary Earps Joins London City Lionesses in Significant Move

Earps Returns to England with London City Lionesses

Former England goalkeeper Mary Earps has officially joined London City Lionesses on a two-year agreement. The move follows her departure from Paris Saint-Germain, where she spent two seasons.

During her time in France, the 33-year-old made 22 appearances in the Premiere Ligue this season, securing 12 clean sheets as PSG concluded their campaign in third place, 13 points behind champions Lyon.

"I feel the club aligns with what I stand for. I can't wait to get started and to get down to business," Earps stated. "The club's values represent what I want to represent and they are passionate about what I want to achieve. All the conversations have been really positive and every time I spoke with the club I wanted to hear more."

"The vision and ambition, including the new training facility, is incredible and I'm looking forward to seeing that develop. It shows what our owner Michele [Kang] and everyone at the club want to do in terms of really going for it. It's about putting a marker down and saying we want to be competitive in a short space of time."

A Distinguished Career and Future Ambitions

Earps, a two-time winner of the Fifa Best Goalkeeper of the Year award, played a pivotal role in England's Euro 2022 triumph and their journey to the 2023 World Cup final. Prior to her stint in France, she spent five years with Manchester United, exceeding 100 appearances and contributing to their first major trophy win, the Women's FA Cup, in 2024. Earps concluded her international career in 2025.

Her return to Old Trafford earlier this season for a Women's Champions League match saw her receive a warm reception from the home crowd, and a mural celebrating her time at the club is displayed outside the stadium.

London City Lionesses' Ambitious Recruitment Drive

London City Lionesses are demonstrating significant ambition in the Women's Super League (WSL) transfer window. In addition to securing Earps, the club is reportedly close to signing Spain defender Mapi Leon and is in discussions with two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas following her departure from Barcelona.

Backed by American businesswoman Michele Kang, London City Lionesses finished sixth in their inaugural WSL season in 2025-26.

"I feel I still have so much left to give to the game and that's exactly why I chose London City," Earps commented. "It won't be easy - the WSL is extremely competitive. The team had a brilliant 2025-26 season finishing mid-table in their first season, now it's about climbing the table and working towards finishing as high as possible."

Impact and Outlook for the Club

Earps' arrival is expected to significantly bolster London City Lionesses, intensifying competition for the number one goalkeeper position, currently held by Elene Lete. Her extensive experience and knowledge of the league are considered valuable assets. Furthermore, her prominent public profile is anticipated to generate increased attention and publicity for the club, aiding in their efforts to expand their fanbase and commercial reach.

The club's recruitment strategy involves attracting several high-profile players alongside a mix of youthful talent, with aspirations to sign up to seven new players this summer. Following a solid debut season in the WSL, London City Lionesses aim to challenge for a top-four position in the upcoming season, though other clubs like Tottenham are also expected to have strong transfer windows.
