Former SNP Chief Executive to Receive Sentence
Peter Murrell, the former chief executive of the Scottish National Party (SNP), is scheduled for sentencing at the High Court in Edinburgh today. This follows his admission last month to embezzling over £400,000 from the party's funds.
Murrell, who is the estranged husband of former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, pleaded guilty to embezzling £400,310.65 from the SNP between 2010 and 2022. He has been held in custody since his guilty plea and is anticipated to receive a significant custodial sentence.
Investigation Uncovers Misuse of Funds
Police Scotland initiated an investigation into the SNP's finances in 2021, prompted by inquiries into the allocation of £667,000 designated for a second independence referendum campaign. While initially probing potential fraud, officers uncovered Murrell's embezzlement. Investigations revealed that Murrell utilized charge cards, bank transfers, and fraudulent invoices to acquire various items, including vehicles, a motorhome, kitchenware, toiletries, jewelry, cosmetics, stationery, and games consoles.
Murrell was first arrested in April 2023, shortly after his resignation from his position due to a controversy surrounding party membership figures. As part of the police operation, the Glasgow residence he shared with Sturgeon was searched, along with the SNP headquarters in Edinburgh.
Sturgeon Denies Knowledge, Swinney Expresses Betrayal
Nicola Sturgeon, who stepped down as First Minister in March 2023, was also arrested during the police investigation but was later informed that she was no longer under suspicion. She has consistently denied any awareness of Murrell's illicit activities, stating she felt "deceived, betrayed and lied to." Last year, Sturgeon announced the end of her marriage to Murrell.
First Minister John Swinney, who appointed Murrell in 2001 during his initial tenure as SNP leader, has issued an apology to party members. However, he has refuted claims of attempting to suppress concerns regarding party finances. Swinney described Murrell's conduct as "horrified" and an "overwhelming betrayal." He has also dismissed calls for an independent inquiry into the matter, arguing that it would not yield more information than the four-year police investigation has already provided.
