Washington D.C.'s Reflecting Pool Faces Draining Following Recent Deterioration
The iconic Reflecting Pool in Washington D.C. is slated for draining after experiencing a resurgence of bright green algae and peeling paint. This development comes mere weeks after the completion of a multi-million dollar renovation project. President Donald Trump has once again pointed to vandalism as the cause of these issues, alleging that a significant gash, which he later described as 350 feet long, was made in the pool and that fertilizer may have been introduced into the water.
"I can't help it if somebody goes in with a knife and starts hacking it up," President Trump stated, referencing the recent upgrades he valued at approximately $16 million.
According to the US Park Police, five individuals have been apprehended in connection with vandalism at the Reflecting Pool, with an additional five receiving federal citations. DC Water authority confirmed on Monday that it has issued a permit for the pool to be drained. The company responsible for the renovation has committed to repairing the rectangular structure under warranty.
Ongoing Challenges Despite Recent Renovations
The Reflecting Pool, a structure built in the 1920s that spans 2,030 feet between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, has historically contended with issues such as leaks, structural decay, faulty piping, algae proliferation, and bird droppings. Despite a comprehensive renovation that saw the pool fully drained in April and refilled earlier this month, the problems have re-emerged. National Park Service personnel had attempted to combat the algae by applying hydrogen peroxide to the water, but sections of the deep blue paint, added during the recent refurbishment, have begun to peel and float to the surface.
President Trump echoed a stern warning from US Attorney for Washington D.C., Jeanine Pirro, regarding the prosecution of those responsible for damaging the pool. In a Truth Social post, Trump cautioned: "Please remember that there is a 10 year prison sentence for the destruction, or even the attempted destruction, of such things - Which will be fully enforced!"
Legal Threats and Political Commentary
In addition to addressing the pool's condition, President Trump has threatened legal action against ABC News, accusing the network of inaccurate reporting on the matter. He asserted that his administration is preparing lawsuits, with any proceeds intended for the US Treasury. Trump criticized ABC for allegedly failing to report on previous administrations' spending on the Reflecting Pool, stating, "ABC failed to report that their close 'friends,' Dumocrats Obama and Biden, spent over 100 Million Dollars on the Reflecting Pool, and it never worked." He contrasted this with his administration's expenditure, claiming, "I spent approximately 16 Million Dollars, and it came out great, except for the Vandalism, which we are now fixing."
