Rome Airports Eyeing Temporary Halt to New EU Entry-Exit System
Rome’s airport authorities may need to temporarily halt the implementation of the European Union’s new digital border control system for non-EU citizens. This measure is being considered to avert potential travel disruptions during the busy summer tourism period, according to the chief executive of the company managing Rome's airports.
Concerns Over Summer Peak Season Chaos
Marco Troncone, the CEO, indicated that allowing passengers to bypass the new biometric Entry-Exit System (EES) might be the sole recourse to prevent widespread travel chaos this summer. His statement echoes concerns raised by officials at other European airports regarding the system's impact during peak travel times.
The EES is designed to register the entry and exit of non-EU citizens at the external borders of Schengen Area member states, utilizing biometric data such as fingerprints and facial recognition. While intended to enhance border security and efficiency, there are growing anxieties about its operational readiness and potential to create bottlenecks, especially at high-volume travel hubs like Rome's airports, during periods of increased passenger traffic.
