SpaceX Valuation Surpasses Amazon, Securing Fifth Spot Globally

SpaceX's Market Value Climbs

Elon Musk's aerospace company, SpaceX, has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing Amazon in valuation, making it the world's fifth most valuable firm. This ascent occurred after a substantial increase in its share price, days following its listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange, which marked the largest public offering to date.

SpaceX's valuation has reached approximately $2.78 trillion (£2.1 trillion), while Jeff Bezos's e-commerce and media conglomerate, Amazon, is valued at about $2.66 trillion. The spike in SpaceX's value coincided with its announcement to acquire the AI coding startup Cursor for $60 billion. SpaceX stated it would integrate Anysphere, Cursor's parent company, known for its artificial intelligence coding agent.

Investor Enthusiasm and Future Prospects

Investors have shown considerable enthusiasm for SpaceX, driven by its ambitious goals, including deploying AI data centers in space and facilitating human colonization of Mars. The company's public listing successfully raised $85.7 billion, a sum that contributed to Elon Musk's status as the world's first trillionaire. Since its initial public offering at $135 per share, the stock has climbed to $209.

However, some analysts have raised concerns regarding the long-term sustainability of SpaceX's high share price, citing uncertainties surrounding its future earnings. Unlike Amazon, which is deeply integrated into daily life, SpaceX's presence is less pervasive among the general public.

Despite its higher market valuation, there is a notable disparity in the revenues and profits generated by the two companies. In the first quarter of 2026, Amazon reported a profit of $30.3 billion, whereas SpaceX, a company largely focused on future-oriented endeavors, recorded a loss of $4.3 billion. For the year 2025, Amazon's sales reached approximately $716.9 billion, significantly higher than SpaceX's $18.67 billion. Nevertheless, investors appear to be placing their bets on SpaceX's future potential. Beyond its core business of manufacturing and launching reusable rockets, the company is also involved in the Starlink internet satellite constellation and is actively expanding its footprint in the artificial intelligence sector.

Strategic Acquisition in AI

The acquisition of Cursor underscores SpaceX's efforts to enhance its AI capabilities. SpaceX and Cursor have had a partnership since April, when SpaceX secured the option to either purchase Cursor for $60 billion or pay $10 billion for their collaborative work. Cursor's technology, similar to that of OpenAI and Anthropic, utilizes AI to automate code writing, a prominent application of artificial intelligence today.

This strategic move is part of SpaceX's broader initiative to bolster its AI business, xAI, which developed the Grok chatbot. In April, SpaceX highlighted the synergy, stating, "The combination of Cursor's leading product and distribution to expert software engineers with SpaceX's million H100 equivalent Colossus training supercomputer will allow us to build the world's most useful models." Cursor's clientele includes major corporations such as Stripe, Adobe, and Nvidia, with Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang reportedly praising it as his "favorite enterprise AI service." The acquisition is projected to finalize by the end of September, with Cursor's shareholders receiving $60 billion in SpaceX shares.
