England Players Rejoin Squad After Investigation
England cricket captain Ben Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson have been cleared of any violent conduct following an incident at a London nightclub. An inquiry concluded that while both players breached contractual obligations by violating a team curfew, they were not responsible for the violence that occurred.
Investigation Findings and Disciplinary Action
The incident took place while the players were celebrating a victory in a previous Test match. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) conducted a disciplinary hearing which found that Stokes and Atkinson had "breached specific contractual obligations that require England players to at all times maintain the highest standards of conduct and act in the best interests of England cricket."
As a result of this breach, both individuals received a written warning. Their exclusion from England's second Test defeat against New Zealand, which was pending the inquiry, served as additional disciplinary action. No further penalties have been imposed.
"No blame should be attached to the players for violent conduct at the nightclub," stated the ECB.
A separate investigation by the Cricket Regulator also found no further case to answer for either Stokes or Atkinson regarding the events.
Details of the Incident
The incident involved a member of the England security staff being struck by Saracens rugby player Totoa Avuaa, resulting in the security guard needing medical attention. The ECB's statement clarified that Avuaa attacked both Atkinson and the security guard.
- Ben Stokes: The investigation determined that Stokes was not involved in the altercation and did not witness either incident.
- Gus Atkinson: Evidence presented to the ECB indicated that Atkinson was the victim of unprovoked attacks and did not retaliate on either occasion.
With the investigations concluded and disciplinary measures taken, both Stokes and Atkinson have been named in the squad for the decisive Test match at Trent Bridge, with Stokes resuming his role as captain.
