Labor Department Demands Action on Unemployment Fraud
Keith Sonderling, the acting head of the U.S. Department of Labor, has issued a significant warning to states and U.S. territories regarding alleged fraud within their unemployment insurance programs. In an unprecedented move, Sonderling dispatched letters to 53 entities, urging them to address and mitigate “waste, fraud, and abuse.”
Historic Threat to State Funding
For the first time in history, the Department of Labor has threatened to withhold administrative funds from states if they fail to combat these issues effectively. Sonderling emphasized the administration's resolve, stating, “We are officially putting governors on notice.”

If states allow it, they will suffer the consequences. This department is no longer afraid to use every lever available to ensure taxpayer money is protected.
