Vaughan Advocates for Stokes' Leadership
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has voiced his strong belief that it would be an "absolute travesty" if Ben Stokes does not resume his captaincy of the England Test team. Despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding Stokes' future in the leadership role, Vaughan emphasized that Stokes possesses sufficient "credit in the bank" to warrant his return.
Uncertainty Surrounds Stokes' Captaincy
Ben Stokes was omitted from England's squad for the second Test against New Zealand following a breach of the team's midnight curfew and involvement in a nightclub incident last week. This event has cast a shadow over the build-up to the Oval Test, with both coach Brendon McCullum and director Rob Key refraining from confirming their desire for Stokes to return as skipper.
Vaughan, however, strongly supports Stokes' reinstatement, telling BBC Test Match Special, "This team needs him as a leader, as a captain." He further praised Stokes' tactical acumen, asserting, "His tactical awareness of the game has been right up there with the best captains I have seen." Vaughan also suggested that other senior figures within the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) lack the same level of "credit in the bank" as Stokes.
"I wouldn't want to be that person that says to the English cricket fan 'Ben Stokes is not our captain any more'," Vaughan added.
Investigations Underway
Joe Root, another former captain, is currently standing in for Stokes on a "game-by-game" basis. The incident involved Stokes and bowler Gus Atkinson breaching curfew after their victory in the first Test, and being present when a member of England's security staff was reportedly struck by a Saracens rugby player. Rob Key, when questioned about Stokes' return as a player, stated, "I don't see why not," but avoided endorsing his return as captain. Similarly, McCullum expressed being "worried" about his captain but did not confirm his future leadership.
Two separate investigations, one by the ECB and another by the Cricket Regulator, are currently ongoing. Vaughan expressed concern regarding the relationships between Stokes, McCullum, and Key, suggesting that recent press conferences have raised doubts about their ability to reconcile.
Relationship Dynamics and Public Silence
Stokes, McCullum, and Key have maintained a close working relationship since taking charge of England's Test cricket in 2022, even retaining their positions despite England's 4-1 Ashes defeat this winter. Reports of a rift between Stokes and McCullum during the Ashes were previously downplayed by Stokes, and McCullum also denied any strain in their relationship on Monday.
Stokes has remained publicly silent since the incident, aside from a brief Instagram post wishing his teammates well. His county coach at Durham, Ryan Campbell, reported that Stokes is in "good spirits" and could potentially play for Durham on Friday.
