World Cup Showcases Talent for Premier League Clubs
The FIFA World Cup serves as an unparalleled platform for footballers to capture global attention, and the current tournament in Mexico, Canada, and the United States is proving no different. With 89 goals scored in 28 matches so far, individual brilliance is certainly on display, particularly from two players whose recent hat-tricks have ignited transfer rumors involving England's top flight.
Jonathan David's Historic Hat-Trick
Canadian forward Jonathan David, 26, made headlines with a hat-trick in Canada's dominant 6-0 victory over Qatar in Group B. This historic win marked Canada's first-ever triumph in eight attempts at the World Cup, celebrated by over 50,000 fans in Vancouver. David's achievement also saw him become the first Juventus player to score a World Cup hat-trick since Paolo Rossi in 1982.
David, originally from Brooklyn, built a strong reputation playing for Gent in Belgium and then as a prolific goalscorer for Lille in Ligue 1. After moving to Juventus in 2025, where he has netted 87 goals in 178 league appearances, Premier League clubs are reportedly monitoring his situation. Newcastle United and Leeds United are among the clubs rumored to be interested in Canada's all-time leading scorer, who boasts 39 goals in 78 international appearances. Juventus is reportedly open to a transfer to manage their summer budget. Former England international Dion Dublin praised David's performance, remarking on his "really good centre-forward play."
Johan Manzambi's Impactful Performance
Swiss substitute Johan Manzambi, 20, also made a significant impact by scoring two goals in Switzerland's 4-1 dismantling of Bosnia-Herzegovina, also in Group B. At 20 years and 247 days old, Manzambi became the youngest player in World Cup history to score two or more goals in a game as a substitute, cementing his place in the tournament's record books.
Interestingly, Manzambi began his football career as a goalkeeper, idolizing Manuel Neuer, but has since evolved into a creative midfielder with a strong attacking presence. His recent goal-scoring prowess suggests he is more than just a "super-sub." Manzambi broke into Freiburg's first team last season, helping them reach the Europa League final, where they lost 3-0 to Aston Villa. His impressive displays have attracted interest from top clubs such as Napoli, Chelsea, and Manchester United. Had he taken and converted a 97th-minute penalty, he would have become the third-youngest player to score a World Cup hat-trick. Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea were previously linked with Manzambi in March, and his continued impactful performances are expected to intensify this interest. Former Crystal Palace forward Clinton Morrison lauded Manzambi's "brilliant finish" and "fantastic volley" that gave Switzerland the lead.
