Alex Freeman, Son of NFL Star, Shines for USA in World Cup Debut

Alex Freeman, Son of NFL Star, Shines for USA in World Cup Debut

A New Sporting Legacy Emerges

Almost three decades after his father, Antonio Freeman, achieved Super Bowl glory with the Green Bay Packers, Alex Freeman is creating his own headlines in the world of football. The younger Freeman recently scored his inaugural World Cup goal, contributing to the USA's 2-0 victory over Australia and securing their advancement to the tournament's knockout rounds.

Reflecting on his achievement, Alex Freeman noted, "It's a full circle family moment. It shows how great the family tree is. It shows he can be great but I can be great in my own way and how amazing it is to have a dad that is successful and can mentor me to be ready for moments like these." Antonio Freeman has been a visible presence at his son's matches, openly expressing his pride.

Overcoming the Shadow of American Football

Given the dominance of American football in the United States, Alex's decision to pursue soccer was not straightforward. Initially, he kept his passion for the sport private, later finding encouragement from his mother and stepfather, who also served as his first coach. The 21-year-old defender shared last year that he had to conceal his love for football, but is now grateful he was urged to follow his dreams.

"It just shows how quick stuff can change and to not doubt yourself," he stated. "Now I'm here, it shows you can never give up. Keep pushing and you never know what chance you're going to get and how you can go and make stuff happen."

Pochettino's Faith and Rapid Ascent

Freeman's journey to the national team has been remarkably swift. Just four years ago, he was playing in Orlando City's reserves, and 18 months prior, he was barely considered for international duty. The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino as USA head coach in 2024 proved to be a turning point. Pochettino, prioritizing youth, integrated Freeman into his squad, leading to his first international call-up last year. Since then, Freeman has become a consistent starter, featuring prominently in last year's Gold Cup and now a key player in the World Cup.

"I want to give the credit to the Orlando club and the coaching staff," Pochettino commented. "If you don't have the support of the coaches at Orlando and you can't build that relationship and trust, it is difficult based on just some clips. This is one example of how the people deserve the credit and of course so does the player. He has an amazing profile, he wants to learn, he always listens. He is a player you really enjoy being with him, not just coaching but is a lovely guy also. He has the potential to be one of the best players in his position in the world."

From 'Diamond's Little Brother' to 'America's Little Brother'

Beyond his on-field performance, Freeman has also garnered significant attention on social media. A TikTok post by his stepsister, Diamond Spaulding, went viral before the USA's opening match. After Freeman's assist in the 4-1 victory against Paraguay, her post, which encouraged support for "my lil brother playing for the US so cheer for #16," gained widespread traction, leading to the affectionate nickname "Diamond's Little Brother." Following his goal against Australia, this moniker evolved, with some fans on X (formerly Twitter) referring to him as "America's Little Brother."

For a player who once hesitated to pursue a career in football, he is now not only forging his own path but also attracting a new generation of fans to the sport. "It shows how I have made it in my way," Freeman said after the game. "I've worked my whole life to be able to get to this moment, to sing the national anthem in front of a home crowd. It just makes me so happy."
