National Festivities Underway for America's Semiquincentennial
The United States has commenced a series of events to commemorate its 250th year of independence. President Donald Trump initiated the festivities with a rally held on the National Mall in Washington D.C., an event that included military flyovers, musical performances, and a speech from the President.
The Great American State Fair and Political Concerns
Central to the Washington D.C. celebrations is a 16-day 'Great American State Fair' on the National Mall. This exposition, organized by Freedom 250, an organization established by President Trump, aims to showcase all 56 U.S. states and territories. The President's involvement as the headliner for the opening rally followed a controversy where several musical artists withdrew from planned performances, citing concerns about the politicization of the anniversary events.
Originally, a concert series was scheduled, but artists such as Martina McBride, The Commodores, Young MC, and Bret Michaels pulled out, some stating they were unaware of the event's affiliation with Freedom 250. In response, President Trump replaced the musical acts with what he termed 'the Greatest Rally, EVER!', featuring artists like Lee Greenwood and tenor Christopher Macchio.
"Tonight, as we stand on the edge of our 250th year of independence, I am thrilled to declare that America is back," President Trump stated at the rally.
The funding for these extensive celebrations also highlights a distinction between two key organizing bodies: America250, a non-partisan entity established by Congress a decade ago, and Freedom 250, a public-private partnership created by President Trump. Congress has allocated $150 million in federal funds, with additional millions reportedly spent by Freedom 250.
Unique Events and Nationwide Celebrations
Beyond the State Fair, other notable events have been planned. The White House lawn hosted an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event, marking the first professional sporting event at the presidential residence. This free, ticketed event, organized by Freedom 250, saw American fighter Justin Gaethje secure a lightweight championship victory. UFC chief Dana White confirmed that UFC covered the event's costs.
The annual Fourth of July fireworks display in Washington D.C. will also see a significant change, with Freedom 250 organizing a substantially larger and longer show, reportedly aiming to surpass a 2016 world record for the largest fireworks display.
Celebrations are not confined to the capital. Across the nation, events include a unique ball drop in Times Square, occurring eight times to mark midnight in each U.S. time zone, and the burial of a time capsule in Philadelphia, set to be opened in 2276. Los Angeles will host a large concert, and various cities, such as Milwaukee, are planning block parties.
Washington D.C. Beautification Projects and Controversies
In preparation for the anniversary, Washington D.C. has undergone several beautification projects initiated by President Trump. One such project involved painting the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool blue. This initiative, intended to address a leaking issue, faced criticism and legal challenges from a non-profit group arguing it ignored historical landmark regulations. Following its completion, the blue paint began to peel, and algae formed, leading to the pool being drained again, with President Trump attributing the issues to vandalism.
