Allegations Surface Regarding TV Personality's Past Remarks
Television personality Ashley Cain is facing questions after a newspaper investigation brought to light historic social media posts that reportedly contain explicit sexist and misogynistic language. The comments, attributed to the former footballer and presenter of the BBC Three series Ashley Cain: Into the Danger Zone, were allegedly made on X (formerly Twitter) and utilized abusive and sexualized terms when referring to women.
Content of the Alleged Posts
According to reports by The Guardian, and subsequently seen by BBC News, Cain's account allegedly used terms such as "slags," "bitches," and other offensive descriptions. Some posts reportedly involved jokes about violence towards women and included terms like "sluts" and "psychos." One specific tweet from 2014, in response to what Cain perceived as a homophobic comment, reportedly told a female user to "go and choke on a [expletive] you slut." Other offensive remarks appeared to be made in reference to female contestants on the ITV reality show Love Island.
BBC Response and Internal Review
Ashley Cain's X account has since been removed from the platform, and BBC News has sought comment from him. The BBC issued a statement emphasizing its expectation of "the highest standards of behaviour from everyone who works with or for the BBC." The corporation confirmed it takes allegations seriously and will "consider this information carefully," declining further comment at this stage.
It is understood that the BBC was previously unaware of these social media remarks. The corporation has now requested that the independent production companies involved with Cain's projects conduct a thorough review of the social media checks performed at the time of his engagement.
Cain's Previous Statements and Career
In other contexts, Cain has expressed more positive views on women, praising them as role models, for their talent, or their advocacy on various issues. He has also hosted high-profile women on his podcast. He previously stated, "I believe in respect and respect is mutual. If you are a lady, I respect you." However, he added, "But if you don't respect yourself, how can you expect me to respect you?" In a panel discussion, when asked how he would react if a man disrespected his sister, Cain indicated he would "like to think" his sister was "brought up in a good enough way not to do" what his sexual partners do.
Before his television career, Cain played for Coventry City FC. He later transitioned into reality TV, appearing on shows like Ex on the Beach and MTV's The Challenge. His BBC documentary series features him traveling to various global locations to interview young men. A second series was filmed earlier this year but has not yet been scheduled for broadcast. BBC executives have previously commended Cain for his "exceptional" ability to connect with young men, considering him emblematic of BBC Three's mission. He also reached the semi-finals of Celebrity MasterChef in 2025.
