Significant Wage Discrepancy Revealed
Employees working in outsourced call centers for the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) are reportedly earning considerably less than their public service colleagues performing identical duties. This disparity, which can be as high as 40%, has been brought to light in submissions prepared for the upcoming “same job, same pay” hearings.
Former Worker Highlights Structural Pay Gap
Nathan Brunne, who previously worked on ATO phone lines through Probe Operations, a private equity-backed company, detailed the wage differences. According to Brunne, the pay gap is not only significant but also escalates in more senior positions within call centers. For instance, team leaders at outsourced operations are compensated approximately $31 per hour, while their counterparts directly employed by the ATO earn over $52 per hour.
These revelations are part of a broader discussion as the Fair Work Commission prepares to address the principle of “same job, same pay,” potentially impacting various sectors where outsourced labor is utilized alongside public service roles.
