Australia has announced a further commitment of $100 million in support for Ukraine, earmarked to bolster its air defense capabilities and munitions supply. This financial assistance will be delivered in two separate payments of $50 million each, contributing to Ukraine's ongoing defense against Russian aggression.
Treasurer Defends Capital Gains Tax Adjustments
Domestically, Treasurer Jim Chalmers has addressed criticism regarding the federal government's modifications to its capital gains tax (CGT) policy. Chalmers refuted claims that the Labor government was compelled into a significant reversal due to pressure from business organizations. The adjustments involve increasing the turnover threshold for small business exemptions from $2 million to $10 million, a change estimated to exclude approximately 98% of active Australian businesses from the new tax framework.
During an interview on ABC's 7.30, Chalmers faced scrutiny from Sarah Ferguson, who suggested that the substantial carve-out indicated a hastily developed policy and inconsistent government commitments. Chalmers, however, maintained that the concessions were the outcome of thorough consultation rather than a capitulation to industry opposition.
