Australia Raises Alarm Over China's Missile Capabilities
Australian authorities have communicated their profound concern regarding a recent long-range missile test conducted by China. While acknowledging the timing, officials have indicated that they do not believe the test was a direct reaction to Australia's Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, visiting the Pacific to formalize a new defense agreement with Fiji.
Minister Highlights Destabilizing Impact
Richard Marles articulated these concerns in an interview, noting that the missile, which China itself has described as nuclear-capable, signifies a substantial increase in China's capacity to deploy nuclear weapons. Marles characterized this development as inherently destabilizing for the region.
“At the end of the day, what we’re seeing here is a long-range missile test from China, which China itself has said is nuclear-capable … This is China demonstrating a much greater range in terms of being able to deploy a nuclear weapon. And ultimately what that is, is deeply destabilizing.”
He further elaborated on Australia's fundamental issue with China's military expansion, highlighting a lack of strategic reassurance for neighboring countries. Marles questioned the rationale behind China's rapid military buildup, suggesting that the absence of clear explanations contributes to regional instability.
