BBC Withdraws Ashley Cain's New Documentary Series
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has confirmed it has no intentions of airing a new BBC Three documentary series featuring Ashley Cain. This decision comes after the reality television personality was accused of utilizing explicit sexist and misogynistic language in past social media communications.
Investigation into Social Media Conduct
A second season of the series, titled 'Ashley Cain: Into the Danger Zone,' had been commissioned and filmed earlier this year, though it had not yet been scheduled for broadcast. The BBC has also stated that it has no future collaborations planned with Cain. Comments attributed to Cain's social media account frequently used derogatory and sexualized terms when referring to women on the platform X (formerly Twitter). Although Cain's X account has since been removed, BBC News had previously sought comment from him regarding these allegations.
Reports, initially by The Guardian and subsequently reviewed by BBC News, indicate that Cain allegedly used terms such as 'slags,' 'bitches,' 'sluts,' and 'psychos' to describe women. Furthermore, he reportedly made jokes referencing violence against women.
BBC's Official Statement and Internal Review
In a statement released on Thursday night, a BBC spokesperson addressed the issue: "The posts by Ashley Cain, albeit from many years ago, are completely unacceptable." The statement further elaborated on the corporation's internal processes: "The BBC has clear requirements around vetting and social media checks, which are undertaken by the production company. In this instance, the process clearly failed and we are investigating why. We are continuing to strengthen our processes to ensure everyone working for, and on behalf of, the BBC meets our values and standards."
The spokesperson concluded, "We have no plans to broadcast the new series of 'Into the Danger Zone', and no future projects with Ashley Cain."
BBC News has also reached out to True North, the production company behind the program, for their comments on the matter. The initial series of 'Into the Danger Zone' remains accessible for viewing on BBC iPlayer.
