Council Issues Apology Over Parking Fines
Bedford Borough Council has apologized for issuing parking fines to vehicle owners whose cars remained at Bedford railway station following a fatal train collision. The incident, which occurred on Friday near Bedford, resulted in the death of a 60-year-old train driver and left over 100 individuals injured.
Many passengers were unable to retrieve their vehicles from the station car park immediately after the crash. Upon their eventual return, they discovered fixed penalty notices on their windscreens.
A spokesperson for Bedford Borough Council stated, "We are aware of this matter and apologise for any incorrect tickets issued."
Details of the Train Crash
The collision involved two East Midlands Railway trains destined for London St Pancras: the Corby to London St Pancras Luton Express and the Nottingham to St Pancras service. The incident took place around 17:15 BST, and the railway line has remained closed throughout the current week.
One individual took to social media to share an image of a parking fine on his car, questioning the council's decision to issue tickets in the aftermath of such a significant event. He highlighted that authorities had advised people to avoid the station, making it impossible for them to collect their cars or extend their parking.
The man clarified that the car park in question, located on Ashburnham Road adjacent to the station, is managed by the council, not a private entity. He noted that his paid parking expired at midnight on Friday, and a ticket was issued at 09:00 on Saturday, despite him being evacuated from a train behind the crash site earlier.
The council has confirmed that it has "already taken corrective action" and urged anyone who still needs a ticket rescinded to contact them via email.
Aftermath and Investigations
The train driver, Shaun Burton, tragically died in the crash. As of Monday, 53 people remained hospitalized, with eight in critical condition. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander commended the emergency services for their "quick, professional and brave" response.
An interim report from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) indicates that the Corby train, driven by Mr. Burton, had proceeded past a red signal before colliding with the stationary Nottingham train.
In response to the incident, three community foundations have launched an appeal to raise funds for the affected passengers.
