Ben Stokes Issues Apology to England Teammates Ahead of Test Return

Stokes Reinstated for Third Test

England Test captain Ben Stokes has offered an apology to his teammates as he prepares to lead the side in the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. Stokes, alongside fast bowler Gus Atkinson, was unavailable for the preceding match, which resulted in a significant 253-run defeat for England. Their absence stemmed from an investigation into a breach of team curfew and an incident at a London nightclub following England's victory in the series opener.

Investigation Clears Players of Violent Conduct

Both players have been recalled to the starting XI for the third Test, which is scheduled to commence on Thursday. This follows a decision by the Cricket Regulator, which found them blameless of "violent conduct." However, a separate disciplinary hearing conducted by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) determined that they had "breached contractual obligations" and consequently issued them with a written warning.

Impact on Debutants Acknowledged

In Stokes' absence, Joe Root assumed the captaincy, and the second Test saw the debuts of Sonny Baker, Jordan Cox, and James Rew amidst numerous team changes. Stokes reflected on the necessity of his apology, stating, "That was one of the first things I had to do as a captain." He acknowledged the broad impact of the situation, noting, "It affected Joe, it affected the squad, it affects the people outside the playing environment."

Stokes specifically highlighted the unfortunate timing for the new players. "It no doubt had an effect on the lads who were making their debut. That should have been all about them but unfortunately a situation out of their control took precedence over their big day of making their debut for England in Test cricket." He stressed the importance of a leader taking responsibility: "It would be stupid and naive for me not to acknowledge that and address that. And it's something that you do have to do as someone who's got the responsibility of being a leader within a group."

He concluded by emphasizing the obligation to address such issues directly. "If that's you that needs to take that responsibility, you need to be big enough and man enough to be able to take that upon your shoulders, look everyone in the eye, and apologise how you need to apologise. That's what I did."
