Stokes Returns to Lead England Squad
England's head coach, Brendon McCullum, has announced that Ben Stokes will resume his role as captain for the third Test match against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. Stokes, who has held the captaincy since 2022, was not available for the second Test due to an investigation following an incident at a London nightclub.
McCullum stated, "Ben will be back, and he'll be captain." The specifics of the investigation are yet to be fully disclosed, but this confirmation signals Stokes' immediate return to the leadership position.
Communication and Team Ambition Remain Intact
The relationship between Stokes and McCullum has been a topic of discussion, particularly after issues during the 4-1 Ashes series defeat. However, both individuals have consistently denied any deterioration in their working relationship.
McCullum emphasized the strong communication between them, telling BBC Test Match Special, "You're just trying to make sure you're very communicative right throughout. We all got the same ambition, which is to make English cricket a very good team and to try to achieve results on the field, and that hasn't changed." He also confirmed daily conversations with Stokes since the nightclub incident on June 8 and a visit from England director of cricket Rob Key this week.
Stokes' Return to Form and Team Preparations
Prior to his withdrawal from county matches to prepare for the Test, Stokes played for Durham against Northamptonshire in the County Championship, scoring 95 runs—his highest since July of the previous year. Gus Atkinson, also involved in the incident, was similarly withdrawn from his county game.
McCullum expressed enthusiasm for Stokes' return, noting, "everyone is excited," especially after witnessing his strong performance for Durham. He added, "I've been speaking to Ben every single day since we had the incident and my assessment was that I was worried about him. To see him go out there and play some cricket and look like he was enjoying himself is really positive."
The head coach acknowledged the recent episode as an "unwelcome distraction" following England's 253-run defeat in the second Test, which left the series tied at 1-1. Despite the challenges, McCullum remains focused on the upcoming decider. "Everyone acknowledges that what unfolded wasn't ideal. We're working through that process and we'll get to a stage that when we arrive at Trent Bridge we'll be able to pick from a full squad."
