Stokes Confirmed as Captain Despite Ongoing Investigation
England's head coach, Brendon McCullum, has announced that Ben Stokes will resume his role as captain for the upcoming third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. This confirmation comes as an investigation into an incident involving Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson at a London nightclub is still pending its conclusion.
Stokes, who has led the Test side since 2022, and Atkinson were both unavailable for the second Test, which England lost significantly. Despite the ongoing inquiry, McCullum expressed his readiness to work with Stokes again, stating, "Ben will be back. He'll be back and he'll be captain."
Communication and Ambition Remain Key
McCullum addressed concerns about his relationship with Stokes, particularly after a challenging Ashes series and a recent breach of curfew by Stokes following England's first Test victory against New Zealand. The coach emphasized the importance of consistent communication. "You're just trying to make sure you're very communicative right throughout," McCullum told BBC Test Match Special. He added that their shared ambition remains to make English cricket a successful team and achieve positive results on the field.
McCullum revealed that he has been in daily contact with Stokes since the nightclub incident on June 8 and confirmed that England's director of cricket, Rob Key, also met with Stokes this week.
Stokes' Return to Form and Team Excitement
Stokes recently returned to competitive cricket, playing for Durham in the County Championship, where he scored 95 – his highest score since July of last year. Both Stokes and Atkinson were subsequently withdrawn from their respective county matches on Sunday to ensure their readiness for the third Test, which commences on Thursday.
McCullum expressed excitement about Stokes' return, especially after witnessing his good form for Durham. He also shared his personal concern for Stokes following the incident. "I've been speaking to Ben every single day since we had the incident and my assessment was that I was worried about him," McCullum stated. He added that seeing Stokes play cricket and enjoy himself was a very positive sign, though he declined to disclose the specifics of their confidential conversations.
An "Unwelcome Distraction" Nearing Resolution
Prior to the second Test, McCullum had openly conveyed his "worry" and "concern" for Stokes. Following the 253-run defeat to New Zealand, which leveled the series at 1-1, McCullum described the entire episode as an "unwelcome distraction."
"Everyone acknowledges that what unfolded wasn't ideal," McCullum remarked. He indicated that the team is working through the process and anticipates having a full squad available for selection at Trent Bridge. "You've always got to navigate through certain things and this is just another example," he concluded, expressing optimism about the opportunity to win the series against a formidable New Zealand side.
