Court Ruling and Charges
A district court in Seoul has handed down a suspended prison sentence to a Brazilian woman for her persistent harassment of BTS K-pop idol Jungkook. The woman, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, was found to have made numerous unauthorized visits to the singer's residence, despite repeated warnings to cease her actions. On one occasion, she rang his doorbell 133 times, an act the court cited as evidence of "an extreme level of obsession."
The court sentenced her to one year in prison, suspended for a period of two years. Additionally, she is expected to be deported from South Korea, pending any successful appeal against the verdict.
Timeline of Incidents
- December 7, 2023: The woman first visited Jungkook's home in Seoul, where she lingered around the property, threw items over a wall, and attempted to deliver letters through gaps in the door.
- Days later: She returned to the property and rang the doorbell 133 times.
- December 13, 2023: She was apprehended after reportedly following a food delivery worker to gain unauthorized access to the property via a side gate.
- December 14, 2023: Released with a warning to stay away, which she subsequently disregarded.
- Following weeks: Her visits continued, prompting police to issue an emergency order prohibiting her from approaching within 100 meters of the property.
- February 2024: Police referred her case to prosecutors after her relentless visits persisted.
In total, the court heard that she visited Jungkook's home approximately 22 times. The woman reportedly stated her actions were "out of love" for the 28-year-old singer, attempting to leave letters and photographs at his doorstep.
Mitigating Factors and Previous Incidents
During the court proceedings, a district judge noted that the ruling considered several mitigating factors, including an assessment that her risk of re-offending was "not significant."
This incident is not the first time a BTS member's home has been targeted. In June of the previous year, a Chinese woman in her 30s was arrested in Seoul for attempting to break into Jungkook's home just hours after he completed his military service.
