British Influencer Faces Murder Charge in Dubai, Raises Concerns Over Self-Defense and Due Process

British Influencer Faces Murder Charge in Dubai, Raises Concerns Over Self-Defense and Due Process

British Woman Charged with Premeditated Murder in UAE

A 23-year-old British TikTok influencer, Brooke George from Gravesend, Kent, is facing a charge of premeditated murder in Dubai, a human rights organization has revealed. The charge stems from the fatal stabbing of her boyfriend, whom she met online. Advocacy group Detained in Dubai states that Ms. George claims she acted in self-defense during a violent altercation with her partner in the United Arab Emirates.

If convicted under UAE law, Ms. George could face the death penalty by firing squad. Detained in Dubai is advocating for her release on bail and for the case to be reclassified as an instance of domestic violence. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office has confirmed it is providing support to a British woman detained in the UAE and her family.

Allegations of Abuse and Self-Defense

Ms. George was apprehended on June 22 and subsequently charged with premeditated murder. While held at Bur Dubai Police Station, she has alleged being forced to strip naked in front of male officers without a female officer present, an experience she described as "deeply humiliating and distressing," according to Detained in Dubai.

Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, stated that Ms. George's relationship with the victim reportedly became abusive during their second visit to Dubai. Ms. Stirling recounted Ms. George's claims that her partner grew "increasingly controlling and abusive." Ms. George reportedly attempted to leave Dubai after he allegedly punched her, withheld her passport, and then attacked her again at their apartment. During this alleged attack, she "feared for her life and, reaching for a kitchen knife within her grasp, acted in self-defense."

Family Concerns and Calls for Protection

Ms. George's mother, Thereza George, expressed deep concern for her daughter's welfare. She noted a significant shift in her daughter's demeanor during the second trip to Dubai. "The day before the incident, she did not seem like herself. She was quieter and not her usual happy, cheerful self, but she did not tell me why," her mother stated. Recalling a conversation with Brooke immediately after the incident, her mother described her daughter as "absolutely terrified" and crying uncontrollably, with a badly swollen eye.

Ms. Stirling also highlighted broader concerns among those close to Brooke George, suggesting she might have been lured to Dubai under false pretenses for exploitation. These concerns were fueled by the partner's alleged change in behavior, a one-way ticket, a professional photo shoot arranged during her first visit, the alleged withholding of her passport, and Ms. George's increasing fear and desire to escape.

Legal Rights and Consular Assistance

Detained in Dubai has raised alarms regarding Ms. George's legal rights, stating that she reportedly has not been granted access to her embassy and was made to provide statements without a lawyer present. Ms. Stirling emphasized that the case "raises serious concerns about violence against women, the right to self-defense, due process and the treatment of British nationals detained overseas."

The organization is calling for Ms. George to be released on bail and to receive "protection, appropriate medical care, legal representation and immediate British consular assistance" as the investigation proceeds. They also pointed out the UAE's "well-documented history of criminalizing and revictimizing women who report violence."

The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office reiterated its support: "We are in touch with a British woman detained in the UAE, we are supporting her family, and we are in contact with the local authorities."
