Antitrust Allegations Against Major Retailers
A group of California drivers has initiated a lawsuit against several prominent gas station operators, alleging that these companies have employed artificial intelligence (AI) technology to unlawfully increase fuel prices. The proposed class-action lawsuit, filed on Monday, targets a range of firms including BP, Circle K, Marathon, 7-Eleven, Walmart, and Albertsons.
AI Tool Under Scrutiny
The core of the plaintiffs' accusation centers on an AI-driven tool that reportedly gathers data from rival gas stations. According to the lawsuit, this technology enables the defendants to "coordinate high prices and wring more money from the pockets of consumers," a practice that the drivers contend violates California's primary antitrust legislation, the Cartwright Act.
The lawsuit claims that the AI-based tool leverages competitor data to facilitate price coordination, leading to artificially high prices for consumers at the pump.
The legal action seeks to challenge what the drivers describe as an anticompetitive scheme, arguing that the use of AI in this manner undermines fair market competition and results in financial detriment for consumers purchasing gasoline.
