Chelsea Nears Agreement for Marco Palestra as Alonso's First Major Signing

Chelsea Poised to Sign Marco Palestra

Chelsea Football Club is on the verge of making Atalanta defender Marco Palestra their first major signing under the leadership of new manager Xabi Alonso. The proposed transfer fee for the 21-year-old Italian international is understood to be more than £43 million.

Palestra, who spent last season on loan at Cagliari, where he was recognized as Serie A's best defender, was widely anticipated to join Italian champions Inter Milan. However, following extensive discussions, sources in Italy indicate that Chelsea has emerged as his preferred destination, reportedly offering more favorable personal terms than Inter.

Alonso's Influence and Future Plans

The impending arrival of Palestra is seen as an early indication of Xabi Alonso's influence, having been appointed as manager rather than head coach. Alonso, who officially begins his role on July 1, has been actively involved in transfer discussions since being named Liam Rosenior's successor in May. Palestra is highly regarded at Stamford Bridge for his versatility, capable of operating as a wing-back or full-back on either flank.

Beyond Palestra, Chelsea is also targeting additional reinforcements. The club is reportedly close to finalizing a deal for Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco and is seeking at least one central defender and a versatile attacker. Several players, including winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting (£40m) and Strasbourg striker Emmanuel Emegha, are also expected to join Chelsea this summer as part of agreements made last year.

The club is also planning further departures, following Marc Cucurella's move to Real Madrid, as they aim to streamline their squad after a challenging season that saw them finish 10th in the Premier League and miss out on European qualification.
