Chilean Court Delivers Verdicts in 1976 Washington D.C. Car Bombing Case

Former Pinochet Agents Sentenced for Role in 1976 Attack

Fifty years after a car bomb detonated in Washington D.C., resulting in the deaths of former Chilean minister and ambassador to the U.S., Orlando Letelier, and his American colleague, Ronni Karpen Moffitt, a Santiago court has issued convictions. Three former agents of Augusto Pinochet's secret police were found guilty of Moffitt's murder.

Sentences Handed Down

Judge Paola Plaza, a special minister for human rights in Chile, sentenced Pedro Espinoza, José Zara, and Raúl Iturriaga to 15 years in prison. Their conviction stems from their respective roles in the killing of Moffitt, who was 25 years old at the time of her death. The individuals convicted were identified as agents of Pinochet's intelligence apparatus, which was known for targeting political opponents both within Chile and internationally.
