Bellamy's Burnley Opportunity Dissolves
Craig Bellamy, the current manager of the Wales national football team, will remain in his position following the collapse of his proposed move to Championship club Burnley. Burnley had approached the Football Association of Wales (FAW) regarding Bellamy taking over as their new head coach after Scott Parker's departure.
Negotiations Conclude Without Agreement
Despite holding talks with the Lancashire-based club, the agreement for Bellamy to join Burnley ultimately did not go through. It is understood that the breakdown in negotiations was not related to compensation for the FAW. However, discussions regarding Bellamy's preferred backroom staff joining him at Turf Moor were reportedly a point of contention.
Other Candidates Emerge for Burnley Role
With Bellamy no longer in contention, former Wolves head coach Rob Edwards is now considered a strong candidate for the managerial vacancy at Burnley. Edwards, who had also been in the running to potentially replace Bellamy as Wales manager, has been a key option for the Clarets since his departure from Molineux earlier this month.
Bellamy's Recent Career and Wales Tenure
Bellamy previously served as a coach under Vincent Kompany at Turf Moor between 2022 and 2024, and also had a brief stint as caretaker manager. BBC Sport initially reported on April 30 that Bellamy was a leading contender for the Burnley job after Parker's sacking. He was appointed Wales boss in 2024, with his contract extending until 2028, encompassing the upcoming European Championships hosted across England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland. Under Bellamy's leadership, Wales did not qualify for the 2026 World Cup, experiencing a penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cardiff.
