Pre-Match Interaction Draws Attention
Social media footage indicates that England full-back Djed Spence seemingly did not shake hands with Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey prior to their World Cup fixture in Boston. The incident occurred as Partey made his initial appearance in this year's tournament.
Partey Faces Fan Reaction and Legal Situation
Thomas Partey, 33, was met with boos from England supporters during his first game at the World Cup, having missed Ghana's opening match. The Villarreal and former Arsenal player was denied entry into Canada earlier, stating he had no prior arrests or charges, which led to him missing Ghana's 1-0 victory against Panama in Toronto.
Partey is scheduled for trial next year, facing seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault. These allegations stem from four different women between 2020 and 2022, to which he has pleaded not guilty. BBC Sport understands that the Football Association did not hold discussions with players regarding the pre-match handshake protocol before the game.
During the Group L match at Boston Stadium, boos were heard from the crowd as Partey's name was announced, and jeers accompanied his touches of the ball throughout the game.
Travel and Readiness
US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed last week: "The US is aware of the pending court case for Mr Partey. However, at this time, he has not been convicted of a crime and was admitted to the United States after being issued a visa."
Despite the circumstances, Partey had expressed his readiness to play against England before Tuesday's match.
