Major Incident at Qatar's Premier Gas Facility
An explosion at Qatar's largest gas processing site, located within the Ras Laffan industrial zone, has led to a significant loss of life and numerous injuries. The incident, described by the interior ministry as a "technical accident," took place on Sunday night, illuminating the city's skyline with an orange hue.
Casualties and Impact
At least 13 people were killed in the blast, with an additional 66 individuals sustaining injuries. Qatar's Energy Minister, Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, confirmed that all fatalities were citizens of India and Pakistan. The Indian Embassy in Doha has expressed condolences and is coordinating with Qatari authorities to assist the victims' families.
"We convey our deepest condolences to the families of those who have unfortunately passed away in the sad incident at Ras Laffan Industrial City last night," the Indian Embassy stated in a post on X.
The explosion, which rattled windows and was felt more than 70km away in central Doha, caused widespread concern among residents. Despite the severity of the event, Minister al-Kaabi assured that Qatar's gas exports would not be affected and emphasized that the accident was not the result of sabotage or hostile actions. He also stated there were no environmental risks associated with the blast.
Investigation Underway
The incident occurred at the Barzan local gas supply facility. QatarEnergy, the state-owned energy company, confirmed the explosion occurred on "Sunday 21 June" and that emergency response teams swiftly contained the subsequent fire. The facility had only recently restarted operations two days prior, after being intentionally shut down for urgent maintenance since December 2025. Minister al-Kaabi noted that determining when operations would fully resume would be challenging, and an investigation into the cause of the accident has commenced.
Previous Incidents and Context
The Ras Laffan Port, recognized as the world's largest artificial harbor and home to the largest LNG export facility globally, had previously been targeted by Iranian strikes earlier in the year. During the US-Israel conflict with Iran, the port reportedly sustained "extensive damage" from retaliatory strikes, leading to a temporary halt in Qatar's LNG production, which accounted for a fifth of the world's supply. Repairs from those earlier events were projected to reduce output by 12.8 million tons of LNG for three to five years, with shipments only recently beginning to resume.
