Trump's Role in World Cup Final
Former United States President Donald Trump is anticipated to be present at the World Cup final and will assist in handing over the trophy, as stated by FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The final match is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
While Trump, 80, has not yet attended any matches during the current World Cup tournament, which began on June 11 across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, there is a possibility he might make an appearance prior to the final.
"We will be together with the president enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course," Infantino, who described his relationship with Trump as a close friendship, informed Fox. When asked if they would present the trophy together, Infantino responded, "Of course, we are together all the time."
Tournament Hosting and Trump's Previous Appearances
The United States is hosting a significant portion of the tournament, with 78 out of 104 matches taking place on American soil, in addition to games in Mexico and Canada.
Andrew Giuliani, the executive director of the White House's World Cup task force, shared with the Telegraph that Trump's absence from earlier games was due to his demanding schedule, noting that he prefers to "leave people watching."
Trump has recently attended other sporting events, including a UFC event at the White House last week. He also made history as the first US president to attend an NBA Finals game, where he was booed in New York during game three, which saw the New York Knicks lose to the San Antonio Spurs.
Last summer, Trump's presence on the winners' podium after presenting the Club World Cup trophy to Chelsea's Reece James at MetLife Stadium reportedly caused some confusion among the players. James remarked, "They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay."
