Former UK Political Figures Join Sky TV 'The Wargame' Series

Former Political Leaders to Star in 'The Wargame'

Former First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, and ex-Conservative minister Michael Gove are set to lead a fictional UK government in a new reality television program titled 'The Wargame.' The Sky TV series will place these and other political figures in a simulated crisis scenario involving a Russian attack on UK soil.

Cross-Party Cabinet Formation

In the four-part series, Michael Gove will assume the role of prime minister, with Nicola Sturgeon serving as his deputy. The fictional cabinet will also include a range of other former political figures from across the British political spectrum. Jim Murphy, the former leader of Scottish Labour, will take on the role of foreign secretary, while ex-Tory MP Dame Penny Mordaunt will be defence secretary. Additional participants include Labour's Baroness Harriet Harman as home secretary, Tory Baroness Sayeeda Warsi as attorney general, and Labour Baroness Ayesha Hazarika as director of communications.

The show will also feature military and diplomatic experts, with retired British Army general Sir Richard Barrons as chief of defence staff and former diplomat Lord Kim Darroch as national security adviser. The simulated UK cabinet will hold Cobra-style emergency meetings to navigate the fictional conflict, while a team of Russia experts, led by British writer Keir Giles, will represent the opposing force. International roles will be played by Anthony Scaramucci as the US secretary of state and Lord George Robertson as Nato secretary general.

Timely Exploration of Crisis Response

Phil Edgar-Jones from Sky described the program as an opportunity to challenge experienced political and military minds to consider their responses under the threat of war. He highlighted the series' relevance, noting the increasing global threats faced today. 'The Wargame' is scheduled to air in September.

Criticism Amidst Personal News

The announcement of Sturgeon's participation follows recent developments concerning her estranged husband, Peter Murrell, who admitted to embezzling over £400,000 from the Scottish National Party (SNP). Murrell, who was the SNP chief executive for more than two decades, is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to using party funds for personal purchases, including vehicles and cosmetics. Sturgeon has denied any knowledge of his actions, stating she was "deceived, betrayed and lied to" by Murrell.

Political opponents have voiced criticism regarding Sturgeon's decision to participate in the show. Douglas Lumsden, the newly elected Conservative MP for Aberdeen South, questioned the timing, suggesting that "eyebrows will be raised at Nicola Sturgeon's decision to cash in on a lucrative TV show while her ex-husband awaits sentencing." Similarly, Scottish Labour's deputy leader, Jackie Baillie, described it as a "bizarre career move" that would not divert attention from "unanswered questions Nicola Sturgeon has to answer about her husband's theft."
