Intense Heatwave Grips France
Forty-nine of France's 96 administrative regions are presently under a red heat alert, as the nation prepares for exceptionally high temperatures due to an escalating heatwave. Forecasts by Météo-France indicate that parts of western France could experience temperatures above 40C (104F) on Monday, with Bordeaux potentially reaching 43C.
Impact on Daily Life and Public Services
The severe weather has prompted significant disruptions. According to the ministry of education, 845 schools have closed for the day, and an additional 1,800 students are being dismissed early. Beyond the red alerts, dozens of other regions are under an orange alert, affecting an estimated 63 million individuals nationwide.
This intense heat follows a weekend where temperatures reached 40C, leading to a ban on alcohol at the annual Fête de la Musique, a national festival celebrated with large public gatherings. In the Gironde region of southwest France, local authorities reported three fatalities among individuals aged 80 to 95, partially attributed to the extreme heat.
Health Minister Stéphanie Rist, speaking on TV1 Info on Monday, acknowledged that many "fellow citizens will suffer" during this period and urged people to closely monitor relatives and neighbors.
While the western coast is expected to bear the brunt of the highest temperatures, Météo-France projects that much of the rest of the country will experience highs ranging from 36C to 40C. The meteorological agency has characterized the heatwave as "widespread, long-lasting and intense," with no significant temperature drop anticipated until the end of the week.
Travel Advisories and Broader European Impact
France's national railway operator, SNCF, has advised "vulnerable" individuals to postpone or avoid train travel this week. In Paris, several train lines have already reduced services on Monday due to the heat. Belgium's train operator has also announced the cancellation of some peak-hour trains for Monday and Tuesday.
Record-breaking temperatures are also expected across other parts of Europe, with Madrid forecast to reach 39C and Rome predicted to hit 37C.
