French Footballer Kenzo Kies Dies in Rhone River Drowning Incident

Young Footballer's Tragic Passing

Kenzo Kies, a 21-year-old French footballer who played for Guingamp in Ligue 2, has died following a drowning incident in the Rhone River. Kies was retrieved from the water by firefighters on Monday in a critical state and subsequently succumbed to his condition in the hospital.

Circumstances of the Incident

The incident occurred as Kies and three companions entered the river near Lyon, seeking respite from the intense heatwave affecting France. Temperatures in some areas of the country have soared to 40C this week. While emergency services successfully rescued three individuals, Kies was the last to be located.

This tragic event contributes to a concerning statistic; Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu recently stated that 40 heatwave-related drownings have occurred in France since last Thursday.

A Promising Career Cut Short

Kies had developed through the youth systems of prominent clubs, including Lyon and Saint-Etienne, before joining Guingamp last year, where he was a member of their reserve squad.

Guingamp expressed their sorrow on social media platform X, stating: "Guingamp has had the sorrow of learning of the death of Kenzo Kies, a young player with the club." The club also affirmed its commitment to providing "full support" to Kies' family during this "painful ordeal."

Saint-Etienne also issued a heartfelt tribute:

"The Green Generation is in mourning. A resident of the Robert-Herbin Sports Centre for seven years, a talented player and discreet young man appreciated by all, Kenzo Kies has lost his life in dramatic circumstances. Saint-Etienne extends its most sincere condolences to his loved ones as well as to those - teammates and coaches alike - who shared a piece of his journey. Kenzo, in the corridors of L'Etrat, no one will ever forget you."

Saint-Etienne has indicated that plans are in motion to honor Kies at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium at the commencement of the upcoming football season.
