Kane Achieves World Cup Milestone
Harry Kane, the captain of the England national football team, recently matched Gary Lineker's record of 10 World Cup goals. This achievement occurred during England's opening match of their tournament campaign in Dallas, where Kane scored twice to secure a 4-2 victory against Croatia in Group L.
Lineker, a former England striker himself, accumulated his 10 World Cup goals across the 1986 and 1990 tournaments. Kane, 32, has reached this milestone participating in his third World Cup, following appearances in Russia in 2018 and Qatar four years ago.
"Welcome to the double-figures club. It's great. I mean, it may have taken him a World Cup more," Lineker quipped on The Rest is Football podcast, before adding, "In all seriousness, Harry Kane is, I think, the greatest English striker we've ever had. I genuinely think that now."
Kane's Overall Impact and Future Prospects
With 81 goals in 115 international appearances, Kane currently leads the list of England's all-time record goalscorers. His performance against Croatia included an early first-half penalty and a powerful header just before halftime, demonstrating his diverse scoring ability.
Lineker further elaborated on his high regard for Kane, stating, "His all-round game is, for me, what separates him from all the others." This sentiment was echoed by former England international Alan Shearer, who noted that Kane's recent success follows impressive performances from other global stars like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland. Shearer believes it is "only a matter of time" before Kane surpasses Lineker's record.
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, though not part of the current England squad, also praised Kane, calling him not only England's best player but "one of the best players in the world." Maguire highlighted Kane's leadership qualities off the pitch as well, complementing his exceptional on-field talent.
England is scheduled to play Ghana in their next group stage match on June 23.
