Gary O'Neil Appointed New Ipswich Town Manager on Three-Year Deal

Ipswich Town Confirms Gary O'Neil as New Head Coach

Ipswich Town has officially named Gary O'Neil as their new manager, securing his services with a three-year contract. The 43-year-old, who previously managed Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bournemouth, takes over from Kieran McKenna, who stepped down earlier this month.

O'Neil joins Ipswich after a stint with French club Strasbourg, where he had been in charge since January. Strasbourg reportedly received a fee of approximately 5 million euros (£4.3 million), including add-ons, for his release, as he had two years remaining on his contract. During his time in France, O'Neil guided Strasbourg to an eighth-place finish in Ligue 1 and led them to the Europa Conference League semi-finals, marking their first appearance in a European last-four.

"It is an honour to be appointed manager of this great football club," stated O'Neil. "I have followed the progress the club has made over the last few years closely, and to now have the opportunity to lead Ipswich Town in the Premier League is something I am hugely excited by. There is a strong vision and ambition at this club and I am fully aware of the responsibility that brings, given how much it means to its supporters and to the community of Ipswich and Suffolk. We all know the challenge ahead as we prepare for the season together and I'm excited to meet everyone and get to work."

He will be joined by coaches Tim Jenkins and Neil Critchley, with whom he collaborated in France. O'Neil's appointment marks his return to the Premier League, following his departure from Wolves in December 2024 and a 10-month tenure at Bournemouth that concluded in June 2023. Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also considered for the role, but O'Neil has long been a favored candidate by the Ipswich hierarchy, with his previous playing connection to Ipswich chief executive Mark Ashton at Bristol City.

Vision for Ipswich Town

O'Neil expressed his strategic approach, noting, "I have managed three teams, and they have all had a similar style. I am willing to adapt, but I have things I am not willing to adapt – things that I am very keen on. I want my team to express themselves on the ball." He emphasized the immediate goal of securing sufficient points for survival in the Premier League, but also highlighted the club's broader ambitions. "This club is not looking to just achieve safety, the aim is to grow and achieve more. It has been in Europe before and won in Europe. It is a big, big football club that can do special things."

McKenna's Departure and Ipswich's Preparations

Kieran McKenna, 40, departed Ipswich despite leading the team to successive promotions, culminating in their return to the Premier League after finishing second in the Championship last season. He guided the Tractor Boys to three promotions in four seasons since taking charge in 2021. McKenna reportedly chose to take a break from football to spend more time with his family, despite being linked with other managerial positions.

Ipswich is set to begin their Premier League campaign at home against Sunderland on August 22nd. The club is expected to invest in strengthening the squad for the top flight, with the primary objective being Premier League survival. Having achieved back-to-back promotions, Ipswich believes they are better prepared for the Premier League this season. O'Neil is anticipated to receive significant backing, providing him with an opportunity to re-establish himself in England's top tier after his previous roles at Bournemouth and Wolves.
