Charges Filed After Edinburgh Incidents
A man has appeared in court in Edinburgh, facing charges of attempted murder with a connection to terrorism. The charges stem from a series of alleged anti-Muslim attacks that occurred across the city on Friday evening, resulting in injuries to five individuals.
Details of the Allegations
Lewis Hawkes, 36, was presented in private at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. In addition to the five counts of attempted murder, he was also charged with assault and robbery, breach of the peace, and culpable and reckless conduct. He did not enter a plea and has been remanded in custody.
The incidents on Friday night involved multiple locations. Two men sustained multiple stab wounds after attending prayers at Broomhouse Mosque. Subsequently, three more individuals were reportedly attacked on Leith Walk. A taxi and a petrol station were also among the targets.
Ongoing Investigation
Police Scotland confirmed that a counter-terrorism unit is leading the ongoing investigation into these events. In the aftermath of the incidents, law enforcement has reportedly engaged with over 90 multi-faith organizations throughout Edinburgh to provide reassurance and gather information. Officers have also been in contact with businesses affected by the alleged attacks.
