Recent Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon have drawn a strong reaction from Iran, which has warned that continued strikes could undermine a newly brokered peace agreement between Tehran and Washington. Peace Deal Details Emerge
The United States and Iran are slated to formally sign a peace deal on Friday at Switzerland's Burgenstock resort, a location chosen for its secure and secluded nature near Lucerne. The Swiss foreign ministry confirmed the venue, noting it was proposed by Pakistani and Qatari mediators, alongside the US and Iran themselves. Following the initial signing, a two-month period of intensive negotiations will commence. These discussions are expected to outline the lifting of economic sanctions against Iran and address the future of its nuclear program.
US Response and International Perspectives
Former US President Donald Trump, speaking at the G7 summit, expressed support for sending the deal to the US Congress for review, stating, “I like the idea, send it to Congress please.” He also indicated that the Strait of Hormuz would be open by Friday and that the full text of the peace agreement would be released in a “formal setting.” Trump anticipates a swift progression to the “second stage” of the deal.
Reports from the Wall Street Journal, citing informed sources, suggest that the US will permit Iran to immediately resume oil and fuel sales as part of the agreement. However, a US official clarified to Reuters that this is contingent on Iran adhering to the deal's terms, which include ensuring free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and refraining from developing nuclear weapons.
Blockade Lifted, Optimism Remains
An Iranian deputy foreign minister, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, confirmed that a two-month US naval blockade on Iranian ports had been lifted in anticipation of the formal signing. He stated, “The lifting of the blockade was something we had emphasised from the outset. It has now begun, and the blockade has been lifted prior to the formal signing.”
Qatar, a significant mediator in the US-Iran dialogue, conveyed cautious optimism regarding the framework agreement. Majed Al Ansari, a spokesperson for Qatar's foreign ministry, expressed hope that the memorandum of understanding would pave the way for enhanced regional security through subsequent talks on the nuclear program and other pertinent issues, commending Pakistan's mediation efforts.
