Wahi Unable to Join Team in Canada
Ivory Coast national team player Elye Wahi has been denied entry into Canada, preventing him from participating in the upcoming World Cup group stage match against Germany. The denial stems from an investigation into alleged spot-fixing in France's Ligue 1, which reportedly led to his arrest last month.
Wahi, a 23-year-old forward for Nice, is accused of intentionally receiving a yellow card during a Ligue 1 match against Metz in May. Spot-fixing involves manipulating specific incidents within a game to facilitate betting profits.
Investigation Details and Federation Response
The public prosecutor's office in Marseille confirmed the arrest of a 23-year-old Ligue 1 player in connection with an investigation into organized fraud, sports corruption, and money laundering. While Wahi was not explicitly named by the prosecutor, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) confirmed it was alerted to an unusually high volume of bets placed on a warning involving Wahi.
The Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) stated it has not received official notification of any judicial or administrative proceedings against Wahi. However, they confirmed that he was unable to obtain the necessary authorization to enter Canadian territory. The FIF expressed support for the player, affirming his continued importance to the national team, and indicated he would remain in the United States while the team travels to Canada.
"To date, the FIF has not been officially notified of any judicial or administrative proceedings involving him. In this particularly delicate period, the FIF extends all its support to the player and reaffirms its confidence in him. Elye Wahi remains an important element of the Ivory Coast national team."
Wahi's yellow card in the Metz game was his fifth of the season, resulting in a suspension for the first leg of Nice's relegation play-off. He later returned to score two goals in the second leg, helping Nice secure their top-flight status.
LFP Stance and Previous Incidents
The LFP has stated it will not comment further due to the ongoing investigation and confidentiality requirements but reserves the right to initiate disciplinary proceedings based on the investigation's progress. The league reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity of its competitions.
Wahi is the second World Cup player to be denied entry to Canada for similar reasons. Ghana's Thomas Partey was previously refused a visa due to ongoing criminal proceedings in the UK, where he faces charges of rape and sexual assault, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
