Draper's Resilient Return to Form
British tennis player Jack Draper has successfully reached the quarter-finals of the Eastbourne International, marking a significant step in his recovery from recent injury troubles. The 24-year-old expressed that his confidence had been severely impacted by his time away from the court but highlighted his gratitude for competing at a high level so quickly.
Overcoming Persistent Injuries
Draper's journey back to the court has been challenging, as he played his first competitive match in over two months on Monday. A knee injury had kept him sidelined since the Barcelona Open in April, adding to a long history of physical issues that have limited him to only 13 matches in the past year. These problems notably began at Wimbledon last year, interrupting what was shaping up to be a career-best run that included reaching the 2024 US Open semi-finals and achieving a career-high world ranking of fourth.
"My confidence levels were below the floor a couple of weeks ago," Draper stated. "I hadn't played in a long time, I wasn't match fit, I didn't play Queen's because I wasn't ready so to come here and to be on court and to be competing and playing at a high level very quickly I'm very grateful." He further added, "I've spent a lot of time off court with injury, I was on a great trajectory last year. My body stopped me in my tracks. I wasn't able to play and the last year has been really difficult."
Match Performance and Future Opponent
In his latest match, Draper defeated fellow Briton and close friend Jack Pinnington Jones with a score of 7-5, 6-4. Despite squandering a set point in the first set, Draper showcased a strong serve, closing out the opener with consecutive aces. He carried this momentum into the second set, securing an early break and maintaining his lead without facing a break point. He will now face Canada's Gabriel Diallo in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Draper praised his opponent, saying, "Jack's a great friend, so it's tough playing against a good friend. He's still young, he recently came out of college and he's been building his way up the rankings. I believe he's going to be a top, top player and I think he showed that today."
Other British Successes and Women's Draw Highlights
Draper is not the only British player to advance in Eastbourne. Jan Choinski secured his first ATP Tour quarter-final by defeating Felix Gill 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2. Additionally, lucky loser Toby Samuel achieved his first Tour-level victory, overcoming Thiago Agustin Tirante of Argentina 6-1, 7-6 (9-7). Gill himself was a late replacement for defending champion Taylor Fritz, who withdrew to ensure full fitness for Wimbledon.
In the women's draw, American second seed Madison Keys dominated Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Third seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia also advanced, coming from behind to defeat Hungary's Panna Udvardy 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
